Respiratory tract infections

RTI can be classified into 2 types

  • Upper Respiratory tract infection
  • Lower Respiratory tract infection

URTI include

  • common cold
  • sinustitis
  • Tontillites
  • Pharyngitis
  • Laryngitis etc..

Symptoms of URTI include Cough, Running Nose, Sore Throat, Sneezing, Nasal Congestion, Head ache, Low Grade Fever, Sneezing.

The main stay of treatment for URTI is in symptom based. Antimicrobials & Anti viral therapy is given in selected patients.

B.LRTI Lower respiratory tract infectionsare more serious then URTI and are leading cause of death among all infectious diseases

The most common LRTI’S are:  bronchitis and  pneumonia

Symptoms include Cough, Expectorant, Haemoptytis, Shortnen of Breath, Fever, Fatigue & Weakness.

Acute bronchitis doesnot require Antibiotic treatment, they are given to patients with Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.

The treatment of bacteria’s pneumonia is selected by considering the

  • Age of the patients
  • Severely of illness &
  • Presence of underlying diseases
